Reggie Wilson

An inaugural Doris Duke Artist, Reggie Wilson is a graduate of New York University, Tisch School of the Arts (1988, Larry Rhodes, Chair). He has studied composition and been mentored by Phyllis Lamhut; Performed and toured with Ohad Naharin before forming Fist and Heel.  He has lectured, taught and conducted extended workshops and community projects throughout the US, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean.

He is the founder and artistic director of the New York City based, Fist and Heel Performance Group.  His artistic practice is guided by a desire to connect African diasporic languages of spirituality and movement to post-modern movement as well as his own personal style. His performance groups’ namesake, fist and heel is a term born of the early black church. Coined by Richard Allen, African Methodist Episcopal Bishop, it is indicative of the kind of fervent, performative worship, Allen disproved of. The term and the conditions of its birth also guide Wilson’s inquiry.
